In spite of all the hullabaloo about a wandering asteroid, Walmart tunnels, Jade Helm, CERN, The Shemitah, blood moons, Yom Kippur and Pope Francis’s visit, none of the doomsday prognostications saw the light of day. We are still here on this planet traversing the cosmos, and the gates of hades are still closed and guarded by the ever faithful and loyal Cerberus.
One can remove their Danger Zone signs and place the hardhats on the hallway rack. The greatest nightmare of human history may wait for humans in the future, but it did not materialize in September—it was just another Great Disappointment for the adherents of the end-times.
However, I am sure the hardhats will not be far from the doors of the true believers. When those great stones fall from the heavens, one needs to always be prepared for the next endless round of bouts of eschatological banter and incessant chatter—like a gathering of squirrels over a harvest of hazelnuts—from the media prophets.
At least the squirrels store the nuts for winter. The other human nuts will be consistent in ratchetting up the engines of doom instead of using hazelnuts for their sole creation—Nutella.
There is nothing like Nutella on graham crackers with a cold glass of dark chocolate almond milk. At least you receive a momentary indulgence and satisfaction.
The only apocalypse to come out of September was the surprise secret meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who believed it was against her religion to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and that her religious beliefs trumped her civil responsibilities to the citizens, all of the citizens, of her county. This was a major revelation, but now the Vatican is attempting to distance the Pope from Kim Davis. But once the harpies are out of Avernus, it is difficult to corral them.
Overall, in the Northern Hemisphere September was the transition month between Summer and Fall. In the Southern Hemisphere the season went from Winter to Spring.
September may have ended like a child falling into sleep to the delightful tune Slumber my Darling.
“Slumber my darling
Thy mother is near
Guarding thy dreams
From all terror and fear
Slumber my darling
I’ll wrap thee up warm
Pray that the angels
Will shield thee from harm”
Unfortunately, October began with a horrific shooting at a community college in Oregon, USA. Terror, fear and death once again came with no shield from harm.
To the families of the victims and the wounded this was not how they planned to spend the first weekend of October. One young man plotted in September to bring his own apocalypse, and he unreleased on the innocents a wave of terror which will touch lives for years to come.
Too many times the innocents are forgotten over time. The news media moves on to other tragic events and stories.
For those who survive, their memories are just as real as the day when tragedy took their loved ones or rendered them distraught and broken in body and spirit. Healing takes a long time, but the memories are never forgotten.
“All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
A time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale, cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies in the cold air
Another night is over
Another day is dawning”

The sunrise will come. The shadows of the dark night of grief and loss will always be there, but one must embrace the new day and continue on the road of life with all the unknowns around the bends and the hopes of a better tomorrow.
